Handling LPG cylinders safely

Storing LPG cylinder :

  • LPG cylinders should be always stored upright and in an area with adequate ventilation
  • Care should be taken that if they are not stored properly they may release liquid LPG that can ignite and flare up uncontrollably, creating a major safety hazard.
  • Ensure that they are protected from excess heat and possible sources of ignition.
  • Always use a seal plug in the cylinder valve whenever no appliance is connected to it.

Using LPG cylinder :

  • Use LPG cylinders only when using LPG appliances.
  • An ice build up around the cylinder may occur in exceptional circumstances and indicates the gas demand is exceeding the supply available. The cylinder will need to be refilled or replaced with a larger one.
  • Never tamper with the safety valve
  • Turn off all appliances when replacing cylinder
  • shut off the cylinder valve before disconnecting

Filling LPG cylinder

Always ensures you receive a cylinder that is with proper certification and has been filled appropriately according to the tare weight + LPG weight mentioned on the cylinder. The empty weight is stamped on the cylinder so the amount of gas left can be calculated by this weight.
Never fill portable LPG cylinders illegally by other sources like household pumps or lpg dispensers as it is dangerous.
The maximum fill level for portable cylinders is 85%. This allows room for expansion with increase in temperature.
Transporting LPG cylinders safely
When transporting an LPG cylinder:

  • secure it in an upright position
  • use a sealing plug so there is no chance of accidental gas leakage
  • keep the cylinder cool
  • Don’t carry it in the passenger compartment.

Avoid keeping LPG cylinders in the car especially in the summer months. It could overheat causing the LPG cylinder to exceed the maximum service pressure resulting in the safety relief valve filling the car with LPG vapour.
If you need to transport a portable LPG cylinder in a vehicle during hot weather, secure it upright and keep it cool by wrapping it in a wet towel.

If an LPG cylinder is damaged, rusty or needs to be disposed of

If an LPG cylinder has been affected by fire, heat or shows obvious physical damage it should be inspected at an authorised test station before being used again or refilled. It should also be inspected if it is rusty, especially underneath.

Never dispose of unserviceable cylinders at the rubbish dump or in the rubbish collection. They need to be disposed of through an authorised test station, LPG supplier or filler.

LPG Cylinder Safety

Basic Safety Rules for LPG Cylinder

ALWAYS:
 Ensure work on fixed LPG installations whether new or being modified is carried out by a licensed or authorised gasfitter.
  Keep LPG appliances and fittings in first class condition via regular servicing, checking regularly for deterioration in performance, signs of corrosion and minor leaks.
 Use equipment and parts specifically manufactured and approved for LPG. Look for the endorsement badge on every appliance.
 With any LPG appliance or burner that fails to ignite immediately, turn off the gas supply and ventilate for at least three minutes to allow any gas to disperse before attempting to reignite.
 Ensure there is adequate ventilation when using LPG appliances (especially unflued appliances) to allow fresh air for consumption and removal of burnt gases.

NEVER:
 Tamper with the safety valve or other cylinder fittings.
 Use undue force to open or close the main cylinder valve. If in doubt, consult a licensed gasfitter.

Care of LPG Cylinder and Fittings

1. Every cylinder must be inspected by an authorised LPG test station at least once every 10 years. The last inspection date should be clearly stamped on the cylinder collar, neck or footing.

2. If any leakage is detected or suspected from a cylinder, turn it off immediately and REFER TO EMERGENCY PROCEDURES.

3. LPG cylinders (except specially designed forklift and automotive cylinders) must always be stored and transported in an upright position. This ensures the safety valve is not immersed in the liquid and is located in the vapour space as required by its design approvals.

4. Cylinders should be stored in a well ventilated space and away from possible sources of ignition, excess heat or other compressed gases.

5. Always secure cylinders during transport, remove any hose, hose fittings and regulators and attach a sealing plug whenever the appliance is not connected.

6. Shut off cylinder valve before disconnecting from appliance and ensure appliances are turned off before connecting new cylinder.

7. The filling of any cylinder (other than automotive) from a service station bowser is an offence.

Use and Care of LPG Appliances

1. Installation and maintenance of LP Gas appliances must only be carried out by licensed or authorised LPG installers or service companies.

2. The installer is responsible to ensure that new or replacement appliances are connected, tested, adjusted and in safe working order. Appliance operating instructions should be handed to the consumer and explained by the installer.

3. LPG appliances must not be connected to other gas supply systems, such as natural gas.

4. Adequate ventilation must be provided to allow air for satisfactory combustion and ensure ample dispersal of the burnt gases. This is particularly important for unflued appliances.

5. Installations in caravans, recreational vehicles and boats must comply with the installation code applicable to fixed appliances. Cylinder compartments must be sealed from the interior of vehicles/boats and vented to the outside. Cylinder valves must be closed when a caravan is in transit. Never use any gas appliance, including a refrigerator, in a moving vehicle.

6. Turn off every LPG appliance in caravans / boats before refueling

7. Do not use unflued LPG appliances under any circumstances in bedrooms, bathrooms or sleeping annexes.

SAFETY FITTINGS ON LPG CYLINDER :

Some cylinders have a contents gauge fitted.
Some cylinders are provided with safety relief valve
Some cylinders have maximum liquid level gauge fitted on cylinders
Regulators are provided on cylinder valves to get the desired pressure for burning
